Ironically, I feel the institution of the military is the anthesis for art and artists, due to the utility and nature of the environment requiring a person to shed their civilian self for service to the organization. However, it is where I established my artist career and is a prominent part of my life. It has shaped my worldview, and given me opportunities to grow, fail, better, and destroy myself. I’ve had good and bad experiences, challenges, and accomplishments thanks to my military career, and it will always be part of my identity and who I am. Being a Soldier has taught me about the importance of service to not only one’s country and way of life, but to others, and learning to be part of something bigger than yourself.
